The National Broadband Network uses a mixture of technologies to provide internet services to homes and businesses across the vast distances of Australia.

Each technology connects premises differently and has different plan capabilities.
An nbn Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connection delivers a direct fibre optic line from the nearest node straight to the property. An nbn network device installed inside the home is required to operate the service.
An nbn Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connection uses fibre to the local network and coaxial cable for the final connection to the property. A network device is installed where the cable enters the premises.
An nbn Fibre to the Node (FTTN) connection uses fibre optic cable to a street cabinet or node, then existing copper lines complete the connection to the premises.
An nbn Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) connection brings fibre to a Distribution Point Unit in the street, with the existing copper network completing the final connection to the home. An nbn connection box is installed inside the premises.
An nbn Fibre to the Building (FTTB) connection delivers fibre to a communications room or cabinet within the building. Existing internal wiring is then used to connect individual units.
An nbn Fixed Wireless connection uses radio signals from a transmission tower to an outdoor antenna installed at the premises. A connection box is installed inside the home where the antenna cable enters.
There is no guarantee that every premises will attain the theoretical maximum speed of a selected speed tier. A number of factors can influence actual speeds.
Distance from the nbn node or Fixed Wireless tower, modem and WiFi capability, WiFi placement, internal wiring, network capacity and traffic can all influence performance. Evenings between 7pm and 11pm are peak periods when congestion may be higher.
