Why check your Swansea address now?

Many homes in Swansea are currently connected using Fibre to the Node (FTTN), where copper is still used for part of the connection.

nbn is progressively moving eligible premises from copper-based technologies to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). Checking your exact address shows whether a Fibre Upgrade pathway is available to you now.

Faster speed options

Access higher nbn speed plans where available at your address.

More reliable connection

Full fibre removes more of the older copper-based network path.

Better for busy homes

A stronger foundation for streaming, gaming, video calls, working from home and multiple devices.

Future-ready connection

Built for growing household internet demand now and into the future.

Will I need a new WiFi modem/router?

If you’re upgrading from FTTN to full fibre, your current WiFi modem may not work with the new connection. The good news is you have a few simple options.

Keep your current WiFi

If your existing equipment is compatible and still performs well, you may be able to keep using it.

Upgrade your WiFi router

A newer router can better match higher fibre speeds and improve WiFi performance around the home.

Choose mesh WiFi

For larger homes or harder-to-reach rooms, a mesh system can help improve WiFi coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about nbn Fibre Upgrade eligibility, plans, installation, equipment and support.

General

What the Fibre Upgrade program is and why it’s worth it.

What is the nbn® Fibre Upgrade (Fibre Connect)?

It’s a program allowing eligible FTTC/FTTN/Hybrid fibre customers to upgrade their address to FTTP. Order an eligible higher-speed plan and nbn® organises the fibre build to your premises.

Why upgrade to FTTP?

FTTP supports the highest residential speeds, better uploads for cloud/backup/work from home, and the most consistent performance — ideal for 4K streaming, gaming and multi-user households.

Eligibility

Who can upgrade and how to check your address.

Is my address eligible for a fibre upgrade?

Use our address checker. If eligible, we’ll display upgrade options and the required plan. If not yet available, you can opt-in for updates as more areas roll out.

Do I need a specific plan to qualify?

Yes — eligibility generally requires taking an eligible higher-speed tier at checkout. We’ll show qualifying plans and typical evening speeds for transparency.

I’m renting — can I request a fibre upgrade?

Usually yes, but the installer may need landlord/owner approval for equipment placement. We’ll let you know if any permission is required before booking.

Plans & Speeds

Choosing a tier and what to expect after the upgrade.

Which speed tier should I choose with FTTP?

Everyday homes: 50–100 Mbps. Power users/4K streaming/gaming: 100–250 Mbps. Creators and large households: up to 1000 Mbps (where available). We’ll confirm what your address can support.

Can I change my plan after upgrading?

Yes — you can switch plans later. We’ll show any price differences and when the change will take effect on your billing cycle.

Costs & Fees

Upgrade charges, non-standard work and promos.

Is the fibre upgrade free?

Standard upgrades are often $0 when you order an eligible plan. If any non-standard work or extras apply, we’ll disclose them clearly before you proceed.

Could there be additional costs?

In rare cases, complex installs or optional internal wiring changes may attract fees. If that happens, we’ll outline options and get approval before work goes ahead.

Installation & Timeline

What happens during the upgrade and how long it takes.

Do I need a technician visit?

Yes, if fibre isn’t already installed. nbn® will fit an external box (PCD) and an internal nbn® connection box (NTD). We’ll confirm appointment details and any prep (power outlet, mounting location).

How long does the upgrade take?

Timeframes vary by area. Many upgrades complete in one visit; some addresses need multiple steps. We’ll keep you updated with dates and next actions as we progress.

Will there be downtime during cutover?

There may be a short interruption when we switch your service to the new FTTP connection. We’ll aim to schedule it at a convenient time and minimise impact.

Equipment & Setup

What hardware you’ll use after upgrading.

Do I need a new modem/router after upgrading to FTTP?

FTTP uses an Ethernet WAN port on your router. We can supply a compatible Wi-Fi router or you can bring your own (BYO) device that supports Ethernet WAN. FTTN-style VDSL modems aren’t used on FTTP.

Where will the nbn® connection box (NTD) be installed?

Typically in a convenient indoor spot with power and cable access — often near your preferred router location. The installer will discuss options on the day.

Orders & Billing

Placing an upgrade order and how billing works during the process.

How do I order a fibre upgrade?

Enter your address, choose an eligible plan and place your order. We’ll submit the upgrade request to nbn®, book any appointments and email you progress updates.

Will my billing change during the upgrade?

Your plan price reflects the tier you choose. If there’s any pro-rata adjustment during cutover, we’ll outline it on your invoice — no surprises.

Troubleshooting & Support

Delays, feasibility issues and post-upgrade tuning.

My upgrade is delayed — what should I do?

Delays can occur due to permit access, complex builds or weather. We’ll keep you posted with the next available dates and handle any required rescheduling with nbn®.

Speeds seem low after the upgrade — how can I improve them?

Test via Ethernet near the NTD, reboot your router, and check device limits. Wi-Fi placement and older routers can bottleneck FTTP speeds. If results are still below our typical evening speeds, contact us for diagnostics.
